Felt-tip pens and permanent markers contain fast-drying ink that, when dry, adheres well to the stone and is water-resistant. Felt-tip pens can be used at every stage of the work. Quick-dry ink absorbs printing ink well, you do not even need to etch it.
There are many types of markers on the market with various tips, which vary in width, shape and hardness. Before starting the work, it is worth checking if the marker is water-resistant and sticks well to the stone.
Permanent markers can be used either on freshly grained stone, or at any stage of work (even during printing process).
In case of adding a drawing onto an already etched stone (i.e. when undrawn areas were prepared with etching to absorb water), it suffices to dry the stone to start work with markers. After the marker ink dries, the printing ink can be rolled up directly onto the wet stone.
When drawing on an open stone (e.g. just grained), after drying the ink, the matrix should be covered with gum arabic to protect non-printing areas.
If the drawing made with a marker has varied thickness and the roller will not reach some places it is worth changing the ink into a certain printing material. For this purpose, after gumming the stone, it is necessary to wash the ink with acetone thoroughly. Next, cover the surface with shellac and asphalt and, after they have evaporated, dampen and roll up with printing ink.
